Setting up a samba and SSH server for backup in a Slackware 12.0 box

Yes, that's a big title, but it's exactly what I'm doing. You can call me a nerdy geek later, but right now just let me show what's the big idea.

I'm not rich, but computers get old. Today I use a very cool looking Vaio laptop, but I used to have a desktop I assembled myself from parts I bought separately. That was back in 2003 (I guess), and already had a 80GB hard drive. My problem is: should I simply toss this desktop out?

Obviously, I didn't. I took the it, formatted and installed the last version of Slackware, setup a neatly prepared samba configuration file (this page helped) and disabled alarms on the BIOS about keyboard errors. I connected it to my wireless router, and we're off.

It just sits around all day, turned off so as to not consume power. However, when I need to store up or download movies, mp3s and other files I have on my limited laptop hard drive, I simply turn it on. It doesn't have a monitor, a mouse or a keyboard, but I can access it through SSH from my wirelessly connected laptop. but if I don't want command-line and all, I can simply run an X server on my laptop which enables me to run even the graphical programs on the Slack box.

Oh... not enough?

I can simply open windows explorer and access my Samba shared folder over my lan and backup or access my files from there.

Best part is that I haven't spent a dime on this. Everything was just laying around.
