Learn Japanese [or] Self-fulfilling prophecy [or] Pygmalion Effect

Image
Beliefs that just come true My way of learning has never been very straightforward, which is to say that I'm mostly self-taught. Not that I don't learn from teachers, quite the opposite actually. By not depending on someone's help to accomplish the task, that help is much more appreciated whenever it's available. The Pygmalion effect , as I've learned to call it, is more commonly known as a self-fulfilling prophecy. Simply put, if you expect something to happens, it probably will. Now, if you step in front of a moving truck expecting magically absorb the momentum and turn into Iron Man, well... you're just an idiot. I'm comfortable talking about this because I've experienced it first-hand from several perspectives. If you need academic sources, try the links on Wikipedia and you might run into some credible sources or not. I'm writing from my experience here: being a student, being a teacher and getting girls. Being a Student One of my bes...

A short essay on Ayn Rand

Image
How I got around to reading Ayn Rand. A friend's recommendation prompted me to read these two novels by some author called Ayn Rand.  He insisted that there were a lot to be learned from those novels, and the seemingly arduous task of two very long novels was even a turn-on for ol' nerdy me. Personally, I didn't even know if that name belonged to a man or a woman. It wasn't until I had already bought both The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged and was halfway through Fountainhead that I got a glimpse of what following Ayn Rand had in the United States of America. I was talking to a couple of American girls in a pub and I mentioned I was reading it. Usually, talking about stuff I like is something that just comes naturally, almost automatically for me. They giggled a little bit and remarked - with a facial expression that made it clear that they didn't want to expand on the subject - that it was really funny. Then we changed the subject. What's the fuzz all ...

Shakira is singing at the Cup opening event

Image
Personally, I find myself proud of Shakira. Not because she's hot and her belly moves more skillfully than my hands. Actually, I'm proud of having someone from South America making it big. Apart from a few songs, I don't even like her stuff. That doesn't matter, though. The reason why I wanted to comment on this is simple: Shakira acquired more and more of the majority characteristics as she advanced on her career. I'm not judging. We all do what we have to do. This still a victory. It kinda hurts to see the girl whom started with bare feet posing with expensive clothing, sunglasses, blond hair...

StarCraft 2: Why am I so excited?

Image
If you don't know StarCraft , you're probably not a gamer, or maybe a younger one. I almost feel like I have a personal relationship to Blizzard. It's been a part of my history since the days I first got my hands on a Super Nintendo Entertainment System, a.k.a. Super Famicom (Family Computer) in Japan. Two of my favorite games of all times have been created by Blizzard Entertainment, at a time when it was known as Silicon & Synapse . Those two would be Rock n' Roll Racing and The Lost Vikings , for the SNES. If yo're a gamer and you don't know these two games, do yourself a favor and play around with them on ZSNES . It's a badass emulator, and I'm sure you'll find ROMs anywhere on the web . Oh, Blizzard's also the company that runs World of Warcraft (WoW) and Warcraft 1, 2 and 3. Incidentally, the mod known as DotA (Defense of the Ancients) was developed on top of Warcraft 3, and is wildly successful. You can check out what I me...
