Scientifically Literate

Great interview, and I quote: “If you are scientifically literate the world looks very different to you. Its not just a lot of mysterious things happening. There is a lot we understand out there. And that understanding empowers you to, first, not be taken advantage of by others who do understand it. And second there are issues that confront society that have science as their foundation. If you are scientifically illiterate, in a way, you are disenfranchising yourself from the democratic process, and you don’t even know it.” I agree, and, as I have said before, when a society allows a scientific illiteracy to continue then the potential for abuse by those that manipulate those that are scientifically illiterate leaves the society vulnerable to making very bad choices. Check out the interview here .

To all my readers, This is, as you may or may not know, a blog maintained by my desire to write. This is not something that generates a lot of revenue, because even though I do put ads with each post, I have neither the desire to have lots of uninterested readers nor the will to hack Google's SEO to get them. Those are not my goals with this blog, because I have none. This blog's purpose, on the other hand, is to provide a way to give consistency to the ideas that somehow get created by the mix of all the information flowing into my average 30-year-old brain. I do not discourage those who are not 30 to read me, however. You see, ideas are nasty little things: they will go away as quickly as they showed up, if you don't grab them by the neck and force them to become something. And this blog is what (sometimes) keeps me sober while thinking. You see, I like to let my mind wander wherever it wants to go, but I have to protect myself from the outskirts it might reach. I think,...

Sarkozy and president Lula in Brazil

Image
To the left, Nicolas Sarkozy, to the right, President of Brazil Luis Inácio Lula da Silva. Quite ironic, actually is the fact that September 7th is Brazil's independence day. Why would Lula and Sarkozy meet on such a date? They're signing a multi-million military agreement. Buying some aircrafts, negotiating when and where to assemble some nuclear submarines, throw some helicopters to spice up the deal... Come to think of it, it's not really about opposing or agreeing, but just business as usual. The original article, in Brazilian Portuguese, can be found here .

And the Democratic Party of Japan has won: what's next?

Here's the story on The Economist. Sorry, but I'm not as optimistic as the author of that article. I don't think we're gonna have big changes in Japan, just like there were no big changes in America since Barack Obama came to office. I'm not saying Obama's not doing a good job, because I wouldn't know. One thing that shouldn't be left out of sight when talking about Obama, however, is that he's popular because he is black, not for political merits. The same goes for the Luis Inácio Lula da Silva, the Brazilian president, for that matter. Most of what is said or commented about these two media characters is closely related to their peculiarities: Obama is black, Lula didn't graduated from college and used to be a blue-collar worker. Discussing about Lula's bad metaphors or Obama's "blackness percentage" is missing the point: these guys are politicians, who've reached the top by compromising. And even though I've no idea ...
