Movies, blogs, my dad and some thoughts.
My dad was over visiting me this last weekend. Come to think of it, having someone over usually is both good and bad: good because of the company and you get to someone who was away; bad because there's another person in the house, and this always means you've got to share your space. Of course there are some people I'm glad to share my personal space with, namely my girlfriend.
Well, since I'm not much of a host, I hadn't a whole lot of fun places to go (I've only lived here two months now). So I didn't know what to do with my dad. After I spent some time trying to figure out something we could do together and that would be interesting, and that he couldn't do anywhere else... I gave up.
I took him to see that movie: Wanted.
Why this movie? Well, it has Angelina Jolie, it's an action movie and... well it'd use up two hours of our time! Even more, if you counted in all of the time to get to the theater, buy the tickets, buy popcorn, walk around... And, of course, there's a plus: you can talk about that movie after you've watched it together.
Actually, a movie feels kind of small once you get used to watching those cool and intricate japanese animes, like Fullmetal Alchemist or Ghost in the Shell SAC. With that said, I think it was a very thoughtful movie for the Holywood standards: you get to be some shithead accountant manager, then become a member of a cool fraternity of killers and then you get to discover you've been played. After you've dismantled that fraternity of killers, the cool ending sentence goes somewhat like this: now you see that I could be wasting my life in a variety of ways, but now I'm a cool guy who isn't played by anyone anymore... how about you?
Well, what is it that you think you should do with your life? I'm just an adult reasoning about a thing that's not good for anything.
Thinking about your life won't give you any money or get you laid. You won't even get audience these days (except if you're Seth Godin)... Our way of thinking about our lives is brought to us by movies, TV and anime series and other types of entertainment (DotA, for example).
So the question is: who do you believe? Can you think by yourself?
