Very simple: never use Windows Media Player again. There are plenty of wonderfull, free, light alternatives. I give you may two favorite alternatives:

This is a player that's been originally developed on linux, but it's been beautifully ported to windows, and you can download it with all the codecs at the page above (get the MPlayer Windows GUI and Windows x86 codecs).
VLC - http://www.videolan.org
VLC was originally meant to be a simple solution for streaming video through a local network. Today, you can download it and use it right away to play practically any video file around.
Noteworthy: these two players ignore the executable parts of video files. This means you can download video and audio without been afraid of codec infections.
