Eating in the toilet
Some months ago I read an article about Japanese students eating their lunch hidden away in restroom stalls. Yeah yeah, they fit the Japanese weirdos stereotype. What I really care about is how that came to be.
Simply put, I think a culture as strong and traditional as the Japanese culture has its disadvantages.
Don't mistake me for a hater. I love the culture. Still, the excessive codification and terrible expectations put on social interactions make it an unwinnable game. If you are "really Japanese", social interactions will give you more pain than pleasure.
Why play a game you're totally sure to lose? Better to eat at the bathroom so people won't think you don't have any friends.
